Chomp Chomp food centre may be smaller in size compared to the average hawker centres in Singapore, but the food choices there will not disappoint. Its location tucked in a neighbourhood of low-rise private homes and its alfresco setting make it an ideal place to enjoy local favourites such as fried Hokkien mee in the balmy weather. It is the perfect venue for supper, but we would recommend you to go early and park yourself at a table outdoors before the crowd (and smoke from barbecued food) gets big.
Food Introductions
I-Chai Food Speciality
"For starters, I-Chai specialises in Foochow oyster cake, kueh pie tee (stewed turnips in a pastry cup) and popiah (turnip rolls) with novelty twists. The signature cheesy sushi popiah ($4) is a traditional popiah wrapped around a slice of cheddar and seaweed. It’s an interesting combination of melting cheese and flavourful stewed turnips. You may also choose to add toppings such as shishamo fish ($1), otak (spiced fish cakes, $2) and unagi (eel, $3)."
Ah Hock Fried Hokkien Noodles
"The fried Hokkien mee here ($3/$4/$5) is dry with just enough stock to keep the noodles moist and silky. Thin rice noodle is used along with egg noodles to absorb all the umami and sweet flavours of prawns and the savoury goodness of pork bones. The average waiting time on weekend evening could stretch to over an hour, so grab some finger food while you wait."
Good Luck Chicken Wings and Satay
"The barbecued chicken wings here ($1.30 each, minimum two pieces) are firm, nicely browned on the skin, and crisped at the tip. They don’t serve lime wedges with the chicken wings, but the side of chilli sauce has enough tanginess to taste. We also find the meat to be well-marinated, very juicy and flavourful. "
And there are a lot more varieties available at the food centre.
